Career as an Electrician Apprentice

After I finished primary school, my mother asked my cousin Mingfei to take me to register at a British school. On that day, I was ignorant and didn’t know to bring the required documents. Before I even arrived at school, he scolded me and left in anger. The poor child was momentarily confused. I am at a loss and can only cry!

Actually, my home is only about ten minutes away from the school. He is an intellectual. Doesn’t he know the importance of studying for children? Later, when he passed away in Malacca, I made a special trip to attend the funeral, treating him as an elder and forgetting that he was a person. A ruthless and cold-blooded person

My mother was helpless and I didn't know what to do. From then on, no one cared about my studies.

After returning from 北加, I was forced to work as a waiter in a coffee shop, but every job was short-lived. Even though I was young, I knew that this kind of job had no future. At that time, everyone accused me of being too lazy to work. That guy, and I can only endure the blame silently, how can I suffer without being able to express my tears and shed them at night!

My cousin, a famous citizen, told me about a fellow villager who opened a shop to repair electrical appliances. My mother asked him to introduce me as an apprentice. I was willing to pay living expenses without any salary. Maybe it was difficult to find such a small job, or the boss was moved and accepted me as an apprentice.

Although the shop is small, it has a variety of products. In addition to repairing various electrical appliances for cars, it also repairs household appliances, industrial motors, etc. The diversification of work played a decisive role in my future development.

I started working as an apprentice here. When the workload was heavy, I worked from morning to 7 or 8 pm every day, with Sundays off. Three meals a day were provided, and I slept on the cot provided by the shop at night. The apprentice's job was to clean the machine parts with gasoline.

I had to deal with stains every day, so there were stains and odors between my nails that couldn’t be cleaned off. After a few months, I was paid about ten yuan. At that time, I didn’t care about the salary or the working environment. Those who watched the joke were disappointed (they all thought it would not last long).

I took the initiative to do the work that I should do. Because I was diligent and studious, I often did work that they thought I shouldn't do and was stopped. Maybe they were afraid that I would learn too much too fast. Days like this did not disappoint me; I am proud to learn a skill! After working for four years, I went from being an apprentice to a semi-skilled worker. The salary gradually increased to about 100 yuan a month, but I often didn’t get the full amount.

I am very active by nature and wanted to buy a motorcycle, which cost about 800 yuan and I I don’t have enough cash. In order to save the interest on the installment payment, I asked my brother to borrow 500 yuan for an emergency first, but the conditions he proposed made me feel chilled! I would rather pay more interest than have my pride hurt. People know whether they are good or bad. This motorcycle The car has been with me for fifteen years, and I have experienced the best time in my life through wind and rain.

During this time, I attended 黄昏 Middle School, a class run by the Ministry of Education for out-of-school adults. Because I was too late to realize the importance of diplomas, didn’t work hard enough, or had a poor foundation in elementary school, I could only barely pass the test. In fact, I ended up in Form Three. The certificate also played a certain role in helping me join ITE. When I was in my fourth year of secondary school, I worked at the Admiralty Department in Sembawang.

Due to the long distance and the need to work overtime, I had to give up my studies.

My cousin, a famous citizen, can be said to be a great benefactor. Without his help, I would not be where I am in the future. He was the supervisor of the motor maintenance department in the factory at the British Naval Base, and he wanted to recruit me as a technician. But at that time, a senior brother happened to want me.

I started my own business, but my boss asked me to work for one more year due to lack of manpower. I also thought that my technical skills were insufficient and I stayed here out of gratitude. Only this year did I have the opportunity to acquire more key technologies to provide smooth progress in the future. After a year, I finally left my job, which was also the place where I grew up after five years.

At that time, my boss still owed me several hundred yuan in wages, but he didn’t pay me back and I didn’t mention it, so I just regarded it as repaying the favor. As the Chinese saying goes: 饮水思源 (when drinking water think of its source). I visited him and gave him a beer every year, and the relationship was good until his death many years later.
