The concentration camp was established to cut off the supply of communist militants. The concentration camp was guarded by the army and all Malays. At that time, freedom of movement was coming to an end. The houses are built individually by the plantation owners. Most of the houses are atap houses with bark walls. All rubber tappers must return to the camp at nightfall.
There are groceries and a coffee shop here. I often have breakfast in the coffee shop, and cook my own lunch and dinner. The dishes I often eat include: spinach, eggplant, long beans and taro leaves and stems. It is especially delicious when stir-fried with small fish sauce and chili.
Fish sauce is made by pickling raw fish with salt. Due to improper storage, flies often attract flies, and many fly larvae grow in the fish sauce. When cooking, remove any larvae you see, and use the rest as additional ingredients to stir-fry together. It’s really delicious! No wonder nutritionists today advocate eating insects.
The most commonly eaten food is wild boar meat. These wild boars are caught by residents in their spare time, and they are usually hung with wild boars. The boar crane is made by making one end of the steel cable into a slip knot, digging a small pit in the ground, opening the knot of the steel rope to the size of the pit, then installing it on the small pit, covering it with branch supports and leaves, and then placing the knot next to it. The small tree is bent into a bow shape, and the other end of the steel cable is tied to the tail end of the small tree, and the trap is formed.
When the wild boar stepped on the trap, the branches broke and the steel cable lost its support. The small tree bounced up and pulled the steel cable upward. The wild boar's feet stepping on the trap were caught by the knot and fished, leaving only three legs. It loses its momentum and cannot fly. A tiger was once captured and had no way to let it go but had to shoot it to death.
Wild boars mostly hide in forests during the day, and usually go to oak orchards after rain or at night to eat rubber seeds or crops. They usually follow the same path in and out of the trees, commonly known as wild boar paths. The wild boar trap must be installed on the road where the wild boar comes in and out (not in an open area), that is to say, at the edge of the gum garden where it connects to the forest.
After installing the wild boar crane, you have to wait a day or two before checking it (sometimes the wild boars caught are eaten by tigers).
I once went with them to inspect and install a wild boar trap. A young wild boar was caught. When it saw us, it wanted to run but couldn't and had to rush forward, but its feet were tied by the rope. It could only make a final struggle, but it was beaten to death with a wooden stick and happily carried home. After being disemboweled and cleaned, the wild boar meat becomes a free delicacy on the table.
Residents drink from well water, shower and do laundry at the pier by the river, while my companions and I often jump into the river to play. One time the companions decided to swim across the river to find fruit on the other side. The river is about a hundred meters wide but very deep. If something happens in the river, rescue will be difficult due to the flow of the river. When I swam to the shallow water close to the opposite bank, suddenly water rose up in the shallow grass, and something rushed out. I instinctively swam to the shore with all my strength, and got ashore in panic! In the end, I couldn't find the fruit and had to swim back. My companions all jumped into the river and I could only swim back with them. Fortunately, it was just a false alarm.
When the rainy season comes, it rains heavily day and night, and the river water swells and flows down the coast, creating a vast ocean all around. The river was so turbulent that it was impossible to sail boats, and the village was surrounded by floods and traffic was cut off. People could only survive by eating dry food that had been prepared and playing cards at home. After a month or so, when the rain stopped and the river water receded, there was mud everywhere and it was difficult to move around. This kind of day happens once a year, and it has to be difficult every year. No matter what.
